The definition of a partial hospitalization addiction treatment program varies from facility to facility. Different places use this term to mean different things.
For this reason, if you are researching a partial hospitalization center, you should look closely at the details of the situation. This term is usually used to describe something that that is in between residential and outpatient rehab programs in terms of intensity and level of care.In most cases, patients do not actually live at the facility with partial hospitalization treatment. They may live at home or in a transitional house but spend most of their days from morning until evening at the drug rehab center. This is a lot more time than is usually required in a typical outpatient program so it is a more comprehensive structure, yet the patients are sleeping somewhere else. They have additional freedom and responsibilities, but there is not a whole lot of time available to have a job, for example. This also cuts down on free time available for drug and alcohol abuse by structuring the individual’s life for them for a while. There are also some addiction programs which say they are partial hospitalization and require patients to live there, but they provide less intense care than most residential treatment centers.
Some people use partial hospitalization as their primary method of care, while others find benefit in it as a transitional period. A patient can go to one of these programs after being in a residential treatment program, sometimes through the same facility, if they are ready for more responsibility but not complete freedom. They can spend their nights in a sober living community for additional support. This is one of the many options available for drug and alcohol rehabilitation that not everyone is aware of, but it can be very effective for an addict.
