People Affected by Addiction Treatment
March 12, 2008
The goal of addiction treatment is to help the individual who suffers from drug and alcohol abuse. The addict should be the central focus of attention at this time, with loved ones and addiction professionals supporting their recovery process. However, other people are also affected when someone receives addiction treatment. It is usually a difficult time for friends, family, and even the addiction specialists, as well.
It is stressful and emotionally draining for the family when a close relative is in a treatment center. They are, of course, generally thrilled the person has agreed to seek help for their problem. However, they might be afraid or worried that the drug rehabilitation won’t actually work and they’re getting their hopes up for nothing. The longer the addiction has occurred and the more severe it is, the harder this situation is on the family.
Drug and alcohol abuse create many damaged relationships and dysfunctions within a group of people. Friends and family might be angry with the addict for creating these problems. They might be concerned about how family dynamics will play out in the future, after the individual returns from the rehab facility or finishes an outpatient treatment program. Most rehab facilities offer family counseling to help with these issues.
Some family members also find it very difficult to watch a loved one suffer in the addiction recovery process. If they see the addict going through detox or withdrawal symptoms, they may be very concerned and feel bad about the pain the addict is in. There are even situations where loved ones can’t handle watching this and actually take the addict out of the rehab center to avoid the discomfort of detox. Unfortunately, this is a serious instance of enabling behavior and will only allow the addiction to continue. It’s important to remember that most parts of addiction treatment are not so distressing and let the difficult times pass.
