Substitution Theory in Addiction Treatment Centers

Some drug addiction and alcoholism treatment programs use a method of treatment that focuses on transferring the addict’s attention to something else that is more positive than substance abuse. This is called substitution theory.

Learning New Skills

There are many different activities that rehab centers can use to try to replace drug and alcohol abuse in an individual’s life. They often concentrate on learning new skills, because this requires focusing a lot of attention that can be moved away from the old, negative habits. Some examples of skills that are used in substitution theory treatment centers include:

  • Acting
  • Music
  • Equestrian
  • Art Courses

Many places offer occasional classes in these things, but those based on substitution theory make one activity the central focus of the program. Individual counseling and group therapy are usually provided alongside learning the new skill.

One advantage of this type of drug and alcohol addiction treatment is that it allows patients to be active and engaged. Many people find typical rehab classes boring to sit through, and these activities can be much more interesting for them. In the meantime, they are able to learn new skills that will be beneficial even after they finish the program. Art, for example, can help a person deal with addiction issues when they go home by giving them a new hobby that relieves stress and helps them meet new friends. Patients also build self-respect and confidence by gaining new abilities. They may be able to feel a sense of accomplishment for the first time in a long while.

Substitution addiction theory treatment programs are certainly not the best option for everyone. People who are uninterested in creativity or outdoor activities would probably be miserable having to live in one of these places. However, they can be a very effective method of beginning successful addiction recovery for certain people.
