What Is Dilaudid?

Patients with severe injuries due to an accident or suffering severe pain from a long term illness may be prescribed Dilaudid to help relieve some of the pain. It should not be taken if you are already taking other similar medications or if you have liver or kidney disease or an underactive thyroid condition.

The medication should not be started or stopped without being under a physician’s care.

Because the medication could alter your ability to think clearly, caution should be taken when using the medication.

How Is Dilaudid Abused?

The most common way that Dilaudid is abused is when people take Dilaudid tablets in larger dosages than they are meant to, or attempt to take this medication in a manner for which it was not intended. For example, many people that abuse Dilaudid do so by crushing the tablets and then snorting the powder in through the nose, or dissolving the powder in water and then injecting it intravenously.

These methods of Dilaudid abuse are extremely dangerous because they can cause harm to the body when you take more of the medication than you are supposed to in a single period of time. You should never alter how you take Dilaudid without first getting permission from your physician.

Dilaudid Withdrawal Symptoms

The withdrawal process from Dilaudid can last for 7 to 10 days following abruptly stopping this drug. These symptoms can be quite severe and include:

  • Anxiety
  • Nausea
  • Yawning
  • Vomiting
  • Anorexia
  • Weakness
  • Diarrhea
  • Twitching
  • Irritability
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Intestinal Spasm
  • Sleep Disturbances
  • Repetitive Sneezing
  • Hot and Cold Flashes
  • Severe Leg and Back Pains
  • Pains and Cramps in the Abdomen

While the symptoms of Dilaudid withdrawal are not inherently dangerous, they can be truly uncomfortable and difficult to handle on your own without help. This is the primary reason for why it is recommended that you visit a drug rehab center for help when dealing with such a chemical dependency.

Dilaudid Abuse Detox

It is possible to become addicted to Dilaudid and other medications without realizing it is happening until it is too late. Most people don’t think of themselves as having addictive personalities or behaviors until they realize they are addicted to a drug or medication. If you discover that you are addicted to a medication or drug you will want to contact a professional for help with the problem. Your doctor can refer you to a number of excellent drug rehab centers specializing in dealing with individuals with addiction issues. They can help you break the physical addiction that is so strong with your body and the drug and then follow this up with much needed psychological work to put you back into the swing of your life.

Through a variety of potential treatment plans, which often include behavioral modification and positive lifestyle training they will help you to find out why you became addicted in the first place and how to avoid future potential hazards of addiction. This will help you enjoy freedom from your addiction for the foreseeable future and help you learn when it is time to seek help again before it is too late.
